Portable Turkey Tavern

Make Portable Coop Duane Wagner

Make your store-bought coop portable and safe by adding a heavy base, 2 casters and 2 wheels. I’ll show you how in this quick tutorial.

  1. Build the coop.
  2. Carefully measure the base of the coop.
  3. Measure it again just to be sure. The old saying is, “Measure twice, cut once.”
  4. Measure a frame that will fit under the coop by using 2”x4” boards that fit well under the coop and extend a bit along the length of it, fore and aft. Just how far to extend fore and aft depends on the size of the wheels or casters and the supporting structure that offsets the wheels and casters. See the pictures for ideas.
  5. Cut the boards and lay them out on the ground.
  6. Temporarily, place the coop on top of the boards for a sanity check. Adjust cuts as needed.
  7. Screw the frame boards together.
  8. Cut boards for the wheel supports.
  9. Drill holes for the shafts or bolts.
  10. Screw the support boards together.
  11. Bolt on the casters.
  12. Insert the shafts and attach the wheels.

We used the pictured coop for a year with sheep. Notice the hog panel fencing we wrapped around the coop to keep them inside and predator out. It had to be moved every few days to help prevent them from getting worms. Now we use it for Turkeys. The heavy base has held fast during many bad storms. I attached a long rope to the front so it could be pulled with my lawn mower. The alternative was to stake the coop down like a tent, and remove stakes for moving.
